PEC Fund Progresses Toward Disbursement for Solar Power, Desalination

According to PIFS, the Forum Secretariat has received concept notes from 12 of the 14 Pacific Island countries eligible to access the PEC Fund, and many are developing detailed project proposals.

Up to US$4 million can be accessed by each country for projects involving solar power generation and seawater desalination.

4 April 2011: The Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS) reported progress on the disbursement of US$66 million to the Pacific region under the Pacific Environment Community (PEC) Fund, having received concept notes from 12 of the 14 Pacific Island countries eligible to access the Fund.

The PEC Fund supports activities involving solar power generation and seawater desalination plants. Many of the countries that submitted concept notes are developing detailed project proposals, according to the Forum Secretariat.

Under the Fund, each country has been allocated an indicative amount of US$4 million, to be spent on projects within two years. [PIFS Press Release]
