OIE World Animal Health and Welfare Fund Launches Activities on Biological Risk Prevention

The Advisory Committee of the OIE World Animal Health and Welfare Fund discussed several measures to expand its activities on biological risk prevention.

These include launching vaccine banks for food and mouth disease and rabies in Asia; closer collaboration with the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention on a global strategy to reduce biological threats; and a basic core curriculum for the training of veterinarians to meet new societal demands.

23 December 2011: The sixth Advisory Committee meeting of the World Animal Health and Welfare Fund of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) discussed the expansion of the World Fund’s activities on the prevention of biological animal risks, including on international cooperation to reduce biological threats and the training of veterinarians to improve compliance with OIE international standards.

The World Fund provides funding for various OIE programmes to strengthen animal disease surveillance and control capabilities worldwide, setting up epidemiological and animal health information mechanisms and implementing training programmes for the detection, control or prevention of infectious animal diseases.

Meeting on 13 December 2011, in Paris, France, the Advisory Committee reviewed new activities to be developed, including: the launch of vaccine banks for food and mouth disease and rabies in Asia; closer collaboration with the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention on a global strategy to reduce biological threats; a basic core curriculum for the training of veterinarians to meet new societal demands; and an expansion of the OIE’s twinning programme for veterinary laboratories to include veterinary education.
