OIE Regional Commission Considers FMD, Standards for Terrestrial and Aquatic Animal Health

The OIE Regional Commission for Asia, the Far East and Oceania considered, among other issues, the need to update and implement OIE standards on aquatic animal health to meet the challenges of rapid expansion of the sector.

30 November 2011: A recent meeting of a World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) regional commission discussed the status of epidemiological developments and Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), and the need for active participation in the development of OIE standards for animal health.

The 27th Conference of the Regional Commission for Asia, the Far East and Oceania of the OIE took place in Tehran, Iran, from 19-23 November 2011.

On FMD control and eradication, participants stressed legislation and human and financial resources to support veterinary governance in accordance with relevant OIE quality standards, as well as specific tools and methods, such as surveillance, early detection, rapid response, vaccination, public awareness and private-public partnerships.

Participants also discussed the need for active participation and collaboration with OIE members in the region in updating and implementing OIE standards on aquatic animal disease control, in view of increasing prevalence of aquatic animal diseases due to rapid growth in farmed fish and shellfish production in the region. Updating and implementing OIE standards were seen as essential to enhance the safety of international trade in animals and animal products, and foster to harmonization of national legislation and control measures.
