7 February 2013: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has announced that the Norwegian Ministry of Environment has signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with UNEP committing to continued cooperation and support to GRID-Arendal for the next 10 years.

UNEP says the MoU confirms GRID-Arendal’s status as a “Centre of Excellence on Polar and Cryosphere Issues,” and as a key partner for UNEP. GRID-Arendal aims to deliver high quality environmental information, particularly in relation to marine and arctic issues. Since 2007, GRID-Arendal has been responsible for the UNEP Shelf Programme, a global initiative to implement elements of the UN Convention of the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) in developing countries.
