New MPA Established in Rewoka Village, Nguna Island, Vanuatu

A new Marine Protected Area (MPA) has been established in Rewoka village on Nguna Island, Vanuatu, with the assistance of the Nguna-Pele Marine and Land Protected Area network (NPMLPA).

The Rewoka MPA sets up new regulations for fishing, waste management, marine species monitoring, tree planting and awareness building.

13 August 2012: The Nguna-Pele Marine and Land Protected Area network (NPMLPA) announced a new Marine Protected Area (MPA), established on 9 August 2012 by the village of Rewoka on Nguna Island, Vanuatu. The Rewoka MPA aims to help the island community manage its marine resources.

According to NPMLPA, staff developed a management plan and established a five-member conservation committee after a week of active community discussions and reef surveys. The Rewoka MPA sets up new regulations for fishing, waste management, marine species monitoring, tree planting and awareness building. The NPMLPA network will continue to support the community of Rewoka, and plans to follow up on the work done by the conservation committee.

The NPMLPA network is a community-based organization with an “adaptive approach” to improving livelihoods, reducing poverty and sustainably managing natural resources by facilitating local initiatives in environmental education, climate change adaptation, waste management, renewable energy and eco-tourism, among other issues.
