1 May 2012: The May 2012 issue of the “Micronesia Challenge Newsletter,” published by the Micronesia Challenge Secretariat, features articles on: the outcomes of the 15th Micronesian Island Conservation (MIC) Retreat; and the endorsement of Palau’s first National Water Policy by its President, Johnson Toribiong.

The 15th MIC Retreat was held in April 2012, in Weno, Chuuk, Federated States of Micronesia. The newsletter notes that key outcomes included: assessment and evaluation of the MIC Strategic Plan; peer-to-peer learning about the status of regional efforts; and the development of leadership skills.

On the endorsement of Palau’s National Water Policy, the newsletter notes that the policy aims to protect and conserve Palau’s water resources, to ensure Palauans have access to safe, affordable, sustainable water supply and wastewater services, and to see that these services are managed and operated sustainably and effectively. The newsletter also notes that the new policy was based on best practices demonstrated by a Global Environment Facility (GEF) Integrated Water Resources Management demonstration project in the Ngerikiil watershed, Palau’s main water catchment.

The Micronesia Challenge is a commitment by the Federated States of Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, Palau, Guam, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands to preserve the natural resources that are crucial to the survival of Pacific traditions, cultures and livelihoods.
