The International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee has adopted some amendments to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships.

At the Committee’s fifty-fourth session, held at IMO Headquarters from 20-24 March 2006, amendments were adopted on regulation of oil fuel tank protection, the definition of “heavy grade oil,” and port State control on operational requirements. Other issues on the agenda included ballast water management and air pollution from ships. The Committee also agreed on a work plan for the further development of a legally-binding instrument on ship recycling.
