7 June 2010: LG Display has signed an agreement with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) to participate in the Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign.
The signing ceremony was attended by Achim Steiner, UNEP Executive Director, and Hyun Hwoi Ha, LG Display IT Business Manager and Vice President. LG Display, a leading firm of electronic monitors and headquartered in the Republic of Korea, created a US$1 million green fund together with LG Electronics, Hewlett Packard and Dell, which are major clients for LCD monitor panels. LG Display and the four client firms will support non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in planting trees in October 2010, in regions that need forestation such as India.
UNEP launched its first global tree planting project in November 2006 in Nairobi, Kenya, during the 12th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 12) to the UNFCCC. Today, over ten billion planted trees in 180 countries have been recorded. The campaign is raising awareness of the inter-dependence between humankind and the planet’s ecosystems, as well as the linkages between tree planting and climate change mitigation, the restoration of biodiversity, air and soil quality and food security.
