At the meeting of the Council for Trade-related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPs) of the World Trade Organization (WTO), from 23-24 October 2007, the group of least developed countries (LDCs) supported the proposal to amend the TRIPs Agremeent to require patent applicants to disclose the origin of genetic resources and traditional knowledge used in their inventions.

The amendment has been proposed by a group of developing countries including Brazil and India, and has also received the support of the African group.
