October 2013: The Land Tenure Journal, an open-access journal of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), has released a thematic issue focusing on fisheries tenure, with articles on fisheries in Grenada, Norway, South Africa, Tanzania and Southeast Asia.

The journal focuses on small-scale fisheries in marine and freshwater environments, and includes two framework articles on key considerations and the role of marine protected areas in securing tenure rights of fishing communities. On key considerations, an article notes that good governance of tenure requires the linking of use rights and management rights to social, economic and human rights. The paper explores the process of defining who should hold rights and recognition of pre-existing tenure arrangements, and the roles of organizational capacity and legal space within broader development policy objectives.
