The International Whaling Commission’s (IWC) 61st annual meeting took place from 22-26 June 2009, in Madeira, Portugal, and brought together over 70 members of the Commission.

The meeting, which was chaired by William Hogarth, Chair of the IWC, examined, inter alia: a report on the discussions of the Small Working Group on the Future of IWC; the report of the Scientific Committee that reported on its work related to the status of a number of large whale populations; and the report of the sub-committee on aboriginal subsistence whaling. The Commission also discussed sanctuaries, environmental and health issues, and cooperation with other international organizations, and announced that it has been granted interim observer status at the International Maritime Organization.
