The IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas organized the IUCN Marine Protected Area Summit, from 10-12 April in Washington DC, US.

The meeting brought together the world’s leading marine experts to develop a strategy for protecting oceans from increasing pressures such as climate change, ocean acidification and overfishing. At the close of the Summit, participants adopted a statement urging governments, business and civil society to rapidly increase marine protected areas, improve management of marine environments and take steps to improve oceans’ resilience to the impacts of climate change.
