IPPC Expert Group Discusses Phytosanitary Capacity Development

Experts discussed how to build on the momentum generated by the adoption of the IPPC Capacity Building Strategic Framework at the fifth Session of the Convention's Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (CPM-5).

October 2010: The International Plant Protection Convention convened an Expert Working Group to review and refine the IPPC phytosanitary capacity development plan.

Convening from 25-26 October 2010, at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy, experts discussed how to build on the momentum generated by the adoption of the IPPC Capacity Building Strategic Framework at the fifth Session of the Convention’s Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (CPM-5). The group recommended priority activities for immediate action, including: field testing and implementing the revised Phytosanitary Capacity Evaluation; developing tools and guidelines for preparing national phytosanitary action plans; developing a training of trainers programme; expanding phytosanitary capacity building databases; developing a roster of experts; initiating the Implementation Review and Support System; and mobilizing resources for capacity development activities. The group will also prepare recommendations with regard to the creation of a subsidiary body on capacity development. [IPPC Press Release]
