During its trip from South Africa to Australia, the schooner Lady Amber deployed 57 "Argos" or drifting robots in the southern Indian Ocean in order to gather data about the health of the oceans, especially on temperature and salinity.
The data are then transmitted by satellite to reception stations and used for numeric modelling for climate forecasting.
13 January 2012: The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has reported on the return of the schooner Lady Amber in Perth, Australia, on 4 January 2012. The vessel has been launching drifting robots as part of the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS), a project supported by UNESCO IOC.
