8 November 2005: The Renewables 2005 conference has adopted the “Beijing Declaration on Renewable Energy for Sustainable Development.” Over 1000 participants from 78 countries gathered from 7-8 November 2005 in China’s Great Hall of the People to consider renewable energy alternatives at the Beijing International Renewable Energy Conference 2005.

Participants adopted the “Beijing Declaration on Renewable Energy for Sustainable Development,” which reaffirms the commitment to “implement the outcomes of the Earth Summit, the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), and the United Nations 2005 Millennium Review Summit, and to substantially increase with a sense of urgency the global share of renewable energy in the total energy supply, as called for in the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation.”

Highlighting the UN Commission on Sustainable Development’s (CSD) upcoming focus on energy, the Declaration invites the CSD “to consider an effective arrangement to review and assess progress towards substantially increasing the global share of renewable energy as foreseen in paragraph 20(e) of Johannesburg’s Plan of Implementation.” [Renewables 2005 web site]
