On 14 March 2008, the heads of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the European Commission (EC), within the framework of cooperation between the two organizations aimed at promoting maritime safety and environmental protection, met in London, UK.

Emissions from ships was among the topics addressed, with IMO Secretary-General Efthimios Mitropoulos briefing Jacques Barrot, Vice-President of the European Commission and Commissioner for Transport, on work progressing within the IMO in this area.
