IMF Review of Marshall Islands Highlights Climate Change Risks
story highlights

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) reviewed economic perspectives for Marshall Islands' future, noting the risks of a global recession in the shorter term, and outward migration and shore erosion on local atolls from climate change in the longer term.

7 October 2011: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) concluded its annual Article IV consultations with Marshall Islands, citing a strong economic recovery since 2009 while cautioning that long-term risks include energy supply and impacts of climate change.

The mission report states that risks to the outlook are on the down side, noting the economy could “face stiffer headwinds if the current global slowdown proves severe and prolonged.” The report notes there could be disruptions in fuel and electricity supplies, and that other longer-term risks include continued outward migration and shore erosion on local atolls from climate change.
