IDLO and UNDESA Host Roundtable Discussion on Law and the Rio+20 Agenda

A roundtable discussion on the contributions of law to the Rio+20 agenda was organized by the International Development Law Organization (IDLO) and the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), with the support of the Government of Italy.

20 April 2012: The International Development Law Organization (IDLO) and the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), with the support of the Government of Italy, hosted a roundtable on the contributions of law to the agenda of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).

The roundtable, held at UN Headquarters in New York, addressed integrating human rights into laws on the green economy, and creating new tribunals and treaties to advance international law on sustainable development. The event was chaired by Irene Khan, Director-General of IDLO, and featured experts involved in the Rio+20 process.

Issues discussed at the roundtable included: the principles of sustainable development in human rights courts and tribunals; the compatibility of the green agenda with international human rights law; and the importance of engaging with Rio+20 negotiations with less than two months to go.
