IDB Supports Water Quality Improvement in Venezuela’s Guaire River

Two Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) loans will help improve water quality in the Guaire River basin in Venezuela and increase access to potable water and sanitation in small and medium-sized communities.

The first project aims to address studies finding that 80% of sewage, domestic and industrial, in the Caracas metropolitan area is currently discharged without treatment into the Guaire River.

IDB14 September 2012: The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has granted US$400 million in two loans to improve the water quality of the Guaire River in Caracas, and increase access to potable water and sanitation in Venezuela.

The first project will focus on sewage disposal in the 12 Guaire River sub-basins and reducing flood and landslide vulnerability. The project aims to address studies finding that 80% of sewage, domestic and industrial, in the Caracas metropolitan area is currently discharged without treatment into the Guaire River.

A second, US$100 million project will improve water quality management in mid-size communities. The project aims to increase quality of life through provision of potable water access, quality drinking water and sanitation improvements. [IDB Press Release]
