14 September 2009: At the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) 53rd General Conference in Vienna, Austria, the appointment of Ambassador Yukiya Amano of Japan as the next IAEA Director General was confirmed. Mohamed ElBaradei, who currently holds the post, will complete his term on 30 November 2009. On 1 December 2009, Ambassador Amano will commence his term as the organization’s fifth Director General.
