The High-Level Symposium on Water Security took place from 4-6 February 2009, at UN headquarters in New York, US.

Organized by the World Water Organization, the event gathered experts from the UN Secretariat and member States, as well as from the corporate, medical, scientific, academic, and NGO communities. The symposium explored the worldwide water security issue and sought to identify specific vulnerabilities and threats, and offered practical solutions for protection and preservation of water infrastructure. Speaking at the event, UN Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro warned that two-thirds of the world’s population will face a lack of water in less than 20 years, if current trends in climate change, population growth, rural to urban migration and consumption continue.
