GBIf13 November 2013: The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) has announced a partnership with a citizen science platform called ‘Diveboard,’ allowing recreational divers to contribute records of species occurrences from the world’s oceans, including inland water bodies. The data will help support marine biologists’ research worldwide.

GBIF will update the data as divers contribute more species observations, through a real-time indexing system in which new or modified data can be seen on the portal within minutes or hours of being entered.

It is anticipated that the data published through Diveboard will help, inter alia, show the spread of invasive species, such as the highly invasive Lionfish, which is native to the Indo-Pacific region but causing major problems in Caribbean and western Atlantic coral reefs.
