Fifth Summit of the Americas' 24 July 2008: The Draft Declaration of Commitment for the Fifth Summit of the Americas was presented during a meeting of National Coordinators of the Summit Implementation Review Group held at the headquarters of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington DC, US.

The draft will be considered for adoption at the OAS Fifth Summit, scheduled to take place from 17-19 April 2009, in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. In the Draft Declaration, which focuses on the theme “Securing our Citizens’ Future by Promoting Human Prosperity, Energy Security and Environmental Sustainability,” the Heads of State and Government of the Americas commit to, inter alia: increase public awareness on energy and environmental issues and ensure that the people of the Americas have access to information on energy, environmental and climate change issues; ensure the eventual stabilization of greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a safe level; support further dialogue and cooperation under the UNFCCC and work towards a global agreement at the UNFCCC meeting in Copenhagen in 2009; and direct the Ministers and other relevant authorities, in conjunction with the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank, to review the potential impacts of climate change for the Americas by 2011 and formulate national Plans of Action for their management and mitigation.
