10 December 2012: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has released a special edition of Infosylva on the occasion of the conclusion of the 18th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 18) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The newsletter focuses on the outcomes of Forest Day 6, held on 2 November 2012, on the margins of COP 18.
Forest Day 6 brought together around 700 forest and forestry experts, activists, policymakers, global leaders and climate change negotiators to discuss, among other issues, the importance of taking a landscape approach to REDD+. In particular, the newsletter highlights the importance of bringing together diverse stakeholders from a broad range of sectors in order to address the drivers of deforestation and forest degradation.
With regard to news items, the newsletter includes an article announcing the development of a pilot demonstration site in China to promote the expansion of carbon sinks in bamboo forests. It also features an article announcing Namibia as one of the winners of the Momentum for Change award for initiating six strategies on coping with climate change vulnerability.
