June 2011: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has released the June 2011 edition of its “Biotechnology in Food and Agriculture” newsletter.

The issue features stories on recent FAO publications, including the Biotechnology Resource Book and the proceedings of a conference on biotechnologies for developing countries. The newsletter also provides summaries on the outcomes and proceedings of relevant international meetings, including: the 39th session of the Codex Alimentarius Committee on Food Labelling, which considered, inter alia, the labelling of foods derived from modern biotechnology; an international symposium on sustainable improvement of animal production and health, organized by FAO and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA); the second World Seed Conference; and a joint workshop of the Aarhus Convention and the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety on sharing experiences and lessons learned in promoting public awareness, access to information and participation in decision making concerning living modified organisms (LMOs).

Furthermore, the newsletter provides links to the FAO/IAEA newsletters on animal production and health and plant breeding and genetics, and updates on the expansion and translation of the FAO Biotechnology Glossary. [Publication: Biotechnology in Food and Agriculture Newsletter]
