FAO Newsletter Emphasizes Links between Forests and Food Security

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) issued the September 2013 edition of its forestry newsletter, inFO News, with an editorial by Tiina Vahanen, Assistant Secretary-General of the World Forestry Congress 2015.

FAO30 September 2013: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) issued the September 2013 edition of its forestry newsletter, inFO News, with an editorial by Tiina Vahanen, Assistant Secretary-General of the World Forestry Congress 2015.

In the piece, Vahanen calls for equity in the distribution of benefits derived from forests, especially through application of the Voluntary Guidelines for the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests, and a multi-sectoral approach to forestry planning.

The edition of inFO news also features the release of several FAO publications on: forests, livelihoods and poverty alleviation in Uganda; medium enterprise participation in sustainable forest product marketing in Central Africa; climate change guidelines developed for forest managers; information on multiple-use forest management in the humid tropics; an exploration of national forest funds design and governance; forests, food security and gender; employment options in forestry to achieve improved nutrition; a food-based approach to non-wood forest products management and agroforestry; and food security.

The newsletter also highlights the launch of FAO websites on food security and nutrition, and on forestry and gender, in addition to learning events on REDD+ convened by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and a discussion on forest degradation hosted by the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF).
