August 2013: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) Regional Office for Africa has issued a newsletter highlighting articles and reports on promoting good governance in natural resource management in the region. The newsletter highlights the contribution of the European Union (EU) Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) Action Plan on combating illegal logging, in addition to presenting a feature article on governance challenges for natural resource management in Africa.

Other articles included in the newsletter address forest governance reform in Africa, the forestry law in Cameroon, the role of the landscape approach in national forest policy formulation, the international forest policy and governance framework and its implications for the region, and good practices for forest governance from Burkina Faso.

Reports on national activities in the newsletter cover river management in Cote d’Ivoire, Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, fisheries management in Tanzania, the conservation of pastoral resources in Algeria, and forest governance for REDD+ in Zambia.

Finally, the newsletter reports on FAO activities for the establishment of national forest monitoring, measuring and reporting verification systems (MRV) in Central Africa, community forest management in sub-Saharan Africa, community engagement in wildlife conservation in Central Africa, and land and natural resource management in Angola.
