At the 28th session of its Committee on Fisheries, which convened in Rome, Italy, from 2-6 March 2009, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) adopted a set of best practice guidelines to reduce the accidental deaths of seabirds, including the world’s 18 species of threatened albatross, in fisheries.

The new guidelines extend the scope of the FAO’s seabird action plan from longline fisheries to include trawling gear and gill-nets.
