Abdoulaye Wade, President of Senegal and Coordinator of the Environment component of NEPAD (New Partnership for Africa Development), presided over a meeting on 11-12 February 2009, in Dakar, Senegal, within the framework of the implementation of the major project of the “Green Great Wall.” The project seeks to plant an erosion barrier stretching across these desert countries, and is being overseen by the African Union, the Sahel and Sahara Observatory and the Community of Sahel-Saharan Nations (CEN-SAD).

Experts at the meeting were encouraged to identify vegetal species, systems of management, production methods for local species and valorization most appropriate on drylands along the Great Green Wall, from Dakar to Djibouti (through Senegal, Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria, Chad, Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti).
