At the initiative of the EU, Heads of delegation of the North East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC) gathered in London, UK, from 31 March – 1 April 2009, to consider NEAFC measures to implement the UN General Assembly resolution calling for vulnerable marine ecosystems to be closed for bottom-gear fishing activities.
The meeting was attended by the EU, Iceland, Denmark in respect of the Faroe Islands and Greenland, Norway and the Russian Federation. The parties agreed to a proposal by Norway to close some areas to bottom-gear fishing activities, but the group did not accept a more ambitious EU proposal.
