A meeting has been held at United Nations headquarters in New York to prepare for the Review Conference of the 1995 Agreement for the Conservation and Management of Straddling Fish Stocks and Highly Migratory Fish Stocks.

The preparatory meeting, which was held from 20-24 March 2006, examined guidelines to be used during the upcoming Review Conference to assess the adequacy of the Agreement. The draft criteria that resulted from these discussions will be recommended to the Review Conference, and cover the extent to which States parties have adopted measures to conserve and manage straddling and migratory fish stocks. Criteria also cover the extent to which States parties have sought to: eliminate overfishing; minimize catch of unwanted species; establish new regional management organizations; and strengthen international cooperation. The Review Conference is taking place from 22-26 May 2006.
