story highlights

The UNFCCC Secretariat has updated the CDM Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) page to reflect the decisions taken by CMP 8 in Doha, Qatar, in December 2012, in relation to the operation of the three Kyoto Protocol flexibility mechanisms in the Protocol second commitment period.

UNFCCC14 December 2012: The UNFCCC Secretariat has updated the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) page to provide clarifications relating to the operation of the CDM during the Kyoto Protocol second commitment period.

The update is provided to reflect the decisions taken by the eight session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP 8) held in November-December 2012, in Doha, Qatar. The FAQs provide a summary of the rules agreed by CMP 8 for all three flexibility mechanisms (the CDM, Joint Implementation (JI) and emissions trading) during the second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol. They highlight, inter alia, that: Annex I and non-Annex I parties can continue to participate in existing and new CDM projects; Annex I parties with second commitment period emission targets can continue to host existing and new JI projects; and Annex I parties with second commitment period emission targets can transfer and acquire units generated by the flexibility mechanisms.
