Non-governmental organizations focusing on conservation, including Greenpeace and WWF, called on members of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) to agree on a moratorium on fishing for this species at ICCAT’s 20th Regular Meeting in Antalya, Turkey, from 9-18 November 2007.

During the meeting, the US also reportedly called on ICCAT members to impose an emergency moratorium on all catches for 3-5 years. ICCAT delegates instead agreed to continue to implement the plan previously adopted, and to undertake a full review at the end of 2008. Delegates also agreed to invite industry members to a “brainstorming” workshop on fishery management and to conduct “catch documentation,” tracing the fish from vessel to market.
