7 October 2013: The African Development Bank (AfDB) coordinated an African stakeholder consultation meeting on the Green Climate Fund (GCF) with the purpose of promoting discussion on the design and the operationalization of the Fund among stakeholders in the region and the African Board Members of the GCF.

The meeting, which was held in Tunis, Tunisia, from 26-27 September 2013, was attended by approximately 70 participants, including representatives from government, the private sector, civil society organizations, academia and UN agencies. A key issue addressed was how African countries can start working to access the Fund’s resources, in order to ensure that African countries are ready to meet the accreditation procedures and fiduciary standards for the Fund. Other issues discussed comprised: how to address Africa’s particularities; lessons learned from other experiences, such as the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF); and the development of capacities.

Anthony Nyong, manager of the Compliance and Safeguard Division, presented on the Bank’s role as a multilateral implementing entity (MIE) to the Fund, describing the comparative advantage of the Bank with regards to implementing large-scale project. [AfDB Press Release]
