This symposium is an international conference for resource managers, scientists and the fishing sector on the collection and interpretation of information in the context of the ecosystem approach. The conference, hosted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), will explore the role of fishers in collecting data, the use of fisher-collected data and knowledge in science, management and policy-making and the broader role of stakeholders in this process. It will be immediately followed by the 'iMarine data platform for collaborations' workshop on 7 March 2014. iMarine is the data initiative for fisheries management and conservation of marine living resources. The workshop will showcase how its data infrastructure is capable of addressing the challenges of the ecosystem approach.
