The 43rd Meeting of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) will convene to discuss the conservation of Antarctic marine life and management of marine resources. The Commission will consider marine spatial planning, including a review of current marine protected areas (MPAs) and proposals for new MPAs.

In response to increasing commercial interest in Antarctic krill resources, a keystone component of the Antarctic ecosystem, and a history of overexploitation of marine resources in the Southern Ocean, CCAMLR was established in 1982. CCAMLR is an international commission with 27 Members and a further 10 countries that have acceded to the Convention. Based on the best available scientific information, the Commission agrees on conservation measures that determine the use of marine living resources in the Antarctic, with the aim of conserving Arctic marine life through an ecosystem-based management approach.

The Commission will discuss implementation of the objectives of the Convention, cooperation with international organizations, and the effects of climate change on the conservation of Antarctic marine living resources. On management of marine resources, the Committee will consider advice from the Scientific Committee and will focus on krill, fish, non-target species, and ecosystem monitoring.
