18-29 March 2024 Kingston, Jamaica
29th Session of the International Seabed Authority Assembly and Council (Part I)

The 29th Session of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) Assembly and Council (Part I) will include the meeting of the ISA Council. It will convene from 18-29 March 2024.

The ISA is an autonomous international organization established under the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the 1994 Agreement relating to the Implementation of Part XI of UNCLOS. The Authority is the organization through which States parties to the Convention organize and control activities in the seabed, ocean floor, and subsoil beyond the limits of national jurisdiction. At annual sessions of the ISA, representatives from its member States meet to discuss and formulate the work of the Authority and its Secretariat.

Negotiations are underway to develop rules, regulations, and procedures (RRPs) relating to commercial exploitation of mineral resources from the deep sea. In July 2023, the Council indicated that it “intends” to continue the elaboration of RRPs, with a view to their adoption at the ISA’s 30th session in 2025.
