116th Meeting of the International Maritime Organization Council

The Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) is elected by the IMO Assembly for two-year terms beginning after each regular Assembly session. The Council is the Executive Organ of IMO and is responsible for supervising the IMO's work. Between sessions of the Assembly, the Council performs all the functions of the Assembly, except the function of making recommendations to Governments on maritime safety and pollution prevention. The Council also: coordinates the activities of the IMO's organs; considers the draft work programme and budget estimates of the IMO and submits them to the Assembly; receives reports and proposals of the Committees and other organs and submits, with comments and recommendations; appoints the IMO Secretary-General, subject to the Assembly's approval; and enters into agreements or arrangements concerning the relationship of the IMO with other organizations.
