17 September 2008: Forest stakeholders gathered in
Washington, DC, US, on 16-17 September 2008, to agree on a new set of
principles for sustainable forest management (SFM) and its central role in
combating climate change.
The meeting followed seven months of global dialogue
with stakeholders, and was convened under the auspices of the World Bank and
The Forests Dialogue. The principles for SFM will be presented to the IUCN
World Conservation Congress in Barcelona in October 2008, and the Climate
Change Talks in Poznan, Poland, in December 2008. [World
