WIPO Working Group Streamlines Text on Traditional Knowledge

The second Intersessional Working Group of the Intergovernmental Committee on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore (IGC) of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), held from 21-25 February 2011 in Geneva, Switzerland, consolidated and streamlined the text on the protection of traditional knowledge, for submission to the 18th session of the WIPO IGC.

2 March 2011: Experts meeting at the second Intersessional Working Group of the Intergovernmental Committee on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore (IGC) of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) focused on the consolidation and streamlining of text on the protection of traditional knowledge.

Participants at the meeting, which convened from 21-25 February 2011, in Geneva, Switzerland, addressed issues related to a definition of traditional knowledge, beneficiaries of protection and the scope of rights to be granted, and how they would be managed and enforced.

The meeting’s outcome – a consolidated, streamlined text on the protection of traditional knowledge – will be submitted to the 18th session of the WIPO IGC, to be held from 9-13 May 2011, in Geneva. [WIPO Press Release] [Meeting Documents]
