UNDP4 December 2014: During an inter-agency training on improving disaster risk reduction (DRR), 24 participants from five UN agencies learned about best-practices in capacity development for DRR and emergency preparedness to help countries assess their capacities and establish frameworks for addressing gaps.

The two-day training, which met in Lund, Sweden, was organized by Lund University and the Capacity for Disaster Reduction Initiative (CADRI), an inter-agency initiative that aims to strengthen technical capacities at the regional and national levels and foster coherence across UN programming. In addition to trainings for UN DRR portfolio managers, CADRI enhances capacities and skills in order to plan and execute DRR programmes.

Noting that DRR specialists are in short supply globally, Hachim Badji, UN Development Programme (UNDP), CADRI Coordinator, said CADRI is working to “build that capacity across the UN system and across the globe.”
CADRI member agencies have developed a service package on DRR capacity assessments and programme planning, which has been initiated in 20 priority countries.

At the workshop, participants praised CADRI as a partnership that supports “a government-owned and government-led process.” [UNDP News Story][CADRI Website]
