UNIDO18 September 2014: The UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), with financing from the Multilateral Fund for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol, is assisting the Government of Nigeria in the phase-out of ozone depleting substances (ODS), through the provision of low-pressure foam machines. The machines will be used by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) making ice machines, facilitating the transition from ODS to ozone-friendly substances.

According to UNIDO, the sector currently uses the ozone-depleting chemical 1,1-dichloro-1-fluoro-ethane, hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) 141B.

UNIDO says that in addition to protecting the environment, providing the equipment also will result in new jobs in the industry, in line with UNIDO’s inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID) approach. [UNIDO Press Release]
