UNDP, OHCHR Call for Expression of Interest in Governance Consultation
story highlights

The global thematic consultations on governance in the post-2015 development agenda seek to reach consensus at a meeting in South Africa in February 2013.

Those interested in attending are asked to submit an expression of interest.

Discussions will focus on integrating global, regional, national and sub-national governance and accountability with the post-2015 development agenda.

21 December 2012: The UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) have called for expressions of interest from those interested in attending the Global Thematic Consultation on Governance, which will take place on 27-28 February 2013, in Johannesburg, South Africa. This Consultation is one of 11 being coordinated by the UN Development Group (UNDG) regarding the post-2015 framework.

The meeting follows a global consultation process that began in October 2012 with an African Regional Dialogue, and also included online discussions and other regional and technical meetings and outreach activities.

The South Africa meeting will try to build consensus on how to integrate global, regional, national and sub-national governance and accountability into the intergovernmental process on the post-2015 development agenda. Discussions will address whether to develop governance goals or mainstream accountability mechanisms into the post-2015 framework. The agenda will focus on three key areas: civic participation, capacities of public institutions and global governance. The Consultation will also consider: lessons learned on governance to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs); measurement of governance issues; and an accountability framework that incorporates human rights principles.

Following the Consultation, UNDP and OHCHR, the Consultation co-conveners, will prepare a report on key issues related to governance and sustainable development, and suggest recommendations on integrating governance and accountability into the post-2015 agenda, ensuring governance and accountability underpin the format of the post-2015 agenda, and engaging with key partners and stakeholders.

The Government of Germany is providing support for the Consultation, which is expected to include 150 participants from government, civil society, inter-governmental agencies, regional commissions, human rights institutions, academia and the private sector. Members of the UN High-level Panel on the Post-2015 Development Agenda (HLP), the Open Working Group (OWG) on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the Post-2015 Secretariat will be invited to attend.

All individuals and organizations wishing to participate in the Consultation must submit an expression of interest by 15 January 2013. [Call for Expression of Interest] [IISD RS Story on Africa Dialogue] [IISD RS Story on Online Public Discussions]
