The World We Want 201519 November 2012: The UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), supported by the Government of Germany, have opened online public discussions on the theme of governance, as part of a consultation process to define the post-2015 development agenda.

The online discussions are taking place on the “World We Want 2015” website and will run to 14 December. The discussions are open to all. Participants are addressing questions about the dimensions of governance, the feasibility of goals on governance, the role of information and communication technology, and specific areas such as civic participation. Background papers are available on the website, including a concept note outlining the overall objectives of the consultation, and its various elements.

The consultation seeks to explore: lessons learned about the components of democratic governance needed for achievement the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs); measurement of progress in governance; and an accountability framework.

Besides online discussions, UNDP and OHCHR are conducting regional and technical meetings and outreach activities, leading up to a global consultation event that will present and discuss key messages with participants including governments, national human rights institutions, civil society organizations, the private sector, trade unions, academia and think tanks. One regional event already held was the African Regional Dialogue on Governance and the Post-2015 Framework, held on 10-11 October 2012.

The global consultation event will be in South Africa and is tentatively scheduled for the first quarter of 2013.

UNDP and OHCHR will draw on input from the consultation process to identify key issues and prepare recommendations for integrating democratic governance and accountability in the post-2015 development agenda, using these to engage with the intergovernmental process towards 2015.

The governance consultation is one of 11 themes to be addressed in a post-2015 process led by the UN Development Group. Other themes are on population dynamics; inequalities; growth and employment; health; education; environmental sustainability; hunger, food security and nutrition; conflict and fragility; water; and energy.
