12 October 2012: The global thematic consultation on governance in the post-2015 development agenda has commenced, with an African Regional Dialogue on the topic. The Dialogue took place from 11-12 October 2012, in Johannesburg, South Africa, hosted by the Pan-African Parliament.
The governance consultation is being led by the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the Office of the High Commissioner on Human Rights (OHCHR). The governance consultation focuses on governance systems and accountability mechanisms, particularly on ensuring engagement with civil society organizations, fostering transparency, strengthening public institutions and human resource capacities, improving regulatory frameworks and preventing corruption. In addition to a series of regional meetings, the governance consultation also includes a research paper compilation, online discussions, social media networking, web postings, media outreach and a newsletter.
The governance consultation is one of 11 global, public thematic consultations being coordinated by the UN Development Programme (UNDP) as part of a “global conversation” on the post-2015 development agenda. The public consultation is taking place on “The World We Want” website, which is jointly administered by the UN and civil society.
The Africa event aimed to gather views, experiences and perspectives of civil society, policy makers and governance practitioners from the region on development priorities in Africa. Input from the Dialogue and other aspects of the global consultation will feed into recommendations on integrating democratic governance and accountability in the post-2015 development agenda, for the attention of the UN Secretary-General’s High-Level Panel of Eminent Persons on the Post-2015 Development Agenda (HLP) and the Open Working Group (OWG) on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
A global consultation meeting of stakeholders is planned for the first quarter of 2013 in South Africa, to be attended by governments, national human rights institutions, parliaments, the private sector, trade unions, private foundations, civil society, academia, think tanks and the media.
