21 October 2009: Many of the over 6,500 attendants at the XIII World Forestry Congress convened today in a forum on forests and climate change, which concluded with a call to comment on a draft message from the Congress participants to UNFCCC COP15.
As part of the Congress, which is being hosted by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Government of Argentina in Buenos Aires, participants to the forum heard panel discussions on: land use, land-use change and forestry (LULUCF); climate change impacts on forests and people; financial and methodological challenges and opportunities from reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD); and REDD initiatives for early action. Concluding the forum, Jan Heino, Chair, Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF), urged participants to review and comment on the draft message of the Congress to the UNFCCC COP15 in December, in order to send a strong message to climate negotiators, including the notion that forests are “more than carbon” and all their services and values must be considered holistically.
