December 2009: The World Food Programme (WFP) has released a report summarizing the effects of climate change on hunger, as well as actions that can be taken to address this challenge.
The report notes a projected increase of 20-50% in the number of people at risk of hunger by 2050, particularly in Africa, South Asia and Central America, but suggests that adaptation efforts could reduce these impacts. It underscores the need to focus on increasing access to food as well as the resilience, sustainability and equitability of food production. The report highlights that these measures are not purely technical and they will require institutional reform and integrated financing that relies on inter-organizational cooperation. The report was produced in collaboration with the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and numerous university partners. [The Report]
