World Bank Releases Report on Water Management in African Cities
story highlights

The World Bank report, titled “The Future of Water in African Cities: Why Waste Water?” aims to change the way urban policy makers in Africa think about water management, planning and project design, and to encourage integrated urban water management (IUWM).

World Bank5 October 2012: The World Bank has released a report for policy makers, titled “The Future of Water in African Cities: Why Waste Water?” The report calls attention to projections that the urban population in Africa will double by 2030 and recommends adopting an integrated, sustainable and flexible approach to water services in urban areas in Africa.

The aim of the publication is to change the way urban policy makers in Africa think about water management, planning and project design, and to encourage integrated urban water management (IUWM). The report highlights that traditional approaches, involving a single water source or system, will not be able to service growing urban populations in Africa, and argues that the complex challenges of water provision requires systems that can span institutional, sectoral and geographic boundaries.

The report’s five chapters address: Africa’s emerging water challenges; an integrated perspective for urban water management; assessing water management challenges and capacities in African cities; in-depth analysis of water management challenges in selected cities; and making IUWM work in African cities.
