World Bank Approves Project to Reduce Energy Losses in Tajikistan

The World Bank is financing an Energy Loss Reduction Project in Tajikistan that is working to reduce commercial electric and gas losses, through the installation of electric meters, and to improve efficiency in electricity and gas utilities.

World Bank14 February 2012: The World Bank has approved US$18 million additional funding for the ongoing Energy Loss Reduction Project in Tajikistan, a project that works to reduce commercial electric and gas losses, improve efficiency in electricity and gas utilities, and finance studies for the proposed Rogun Hydropower Project.

The Energy Loss Reduction Project began in 2005 with an International Development Association (IDA) credit and grant of US$19 million and Government of Switzerland’s Secretariat for Economic Cooperation (SECO) grant of US$8 million. In 2011, the project was expanded to include research into the proposed Rogun Hydropower Project. The project has already funded the installation of 170,000 electricity meters, which has improved efficiency and countered financial losses. [World Bank Press Release]
