Workshop Discusses Ways to Spur Rural Electrification in West and Central Africa

The European Commission and the Global Sustainable Electricity Partnership co-sponsored a high-level workshop in Benin, at which participants identified, inter alia, the most ideal mechanisms for attracting financing for rural electrification projects in their countries.

3 October 2012: The European Commission and the Global Sustainable Electricity Partnership co-sponsored a high-level workshop on financing sustainable rural electrification projects in West and Central Africa. The workshop convened from 2-3 October in Cotonou, Benin.

Participants were tasked with identifying: the most ideal mechanisms in their domestic environments for attracting financing for rural electrification projects; ways to strengthen public-private partnerships and create an environment conducive to accelerating rural electrification; and important short and medium-term actions to encourage rural electrification based on domestic needs.

In an opening statement, Sofiatou Onifade Baba Moussa, Minister of Energy, Benin, thanked donor partners and reiterated Benin’s commitment to the promotion of the development and deployment of rural electrification technologies in Africa. [Global Sustainable Electricity Partnership Press Release]
